Our Pop-Kultur Festival 2018 review
Pop-Kultur was three intense days, filled with art exhibitions, talks, commissioned works, DJ sets and concerts. We recorded our impressions of the festival in pictures and words for you.
Focus on female artists
Male artists and bands have unfortunately always been predominant in lineups. An exceptional feature of Pop-Kultur is its focus on female artists. The curators of the festival imposed a quota of at least 50%, which we think is definitely worth supporting.
Our highlight: the commissioned work “Sky Blue Cowgirl” from Sophia Kennedy
On the opening day of the festival, Sophia Kennedy presented her commissioned work called “Sky Blue Cowgirl” in Kulturbrauerei’s theater. We immediately felt intrigued when entering the room. Firstly, because of the foggy atmosphere. Secondly, because of the imposing mechanical bull which was set up in the middle of the room. Lastly, because the band dressed in bright sparkling outfits, that completed this theatrical scene. It was a unique musical experience, and a fantastic discovery for us. If you haven’t heard of Sophia Kennedy yet, check out our Pop-Kultur playlist.
A musical journey with Lisa Morgenstern
Another great surprise for us was Lisa Morgenstern, a German/Bulgarian pianist, composer and singer. We were curious to see what will come up from the complex set of modular synthesizers and piano on stage. The result was a harmonious balance between electronic and classical music. We embarked on a musical journey through the sounds of intense piano instrumentals, organic electronica, baroque synth-pop and her crystal clear voice. Lisa Morgenstern who is also part of Berlin’s leading Bulgarian Women’s Choir, surely gave an ethereal performance.
Expectations exceeded with Nilüfer Yanya
Nilüfer Yanya is an artist we were impatiently looking forward to see. She exceeded all of our expectations by giving a truly intimate and emotional performance. A few fans were standing in the front row, and so were we. We were all singing along, sometimes closing our eyes to fully appreciate the sound of her beautiful voice. At the end of the concert, the public was certainly left wanting for more.
After three days of incredible performances, we are definitely looking forward to the next Pop-Kultur edition! In the meantime, we will be listening to our favorite artists from this year’s lineup. Check out our playlist!
